BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5, Movement 1
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7, Movement 4
BEETHOVEN Violin Concerto, Movement 3

Beethoven’s story of personal triumph over tragedy still captivates us today. As he struggled with hearing loss and eventual deafness, his musical voice grew ever stronger and more influential. You’ll hear selections from several of his symphonies, including the “Eroica,” (originally dedicated to Napoleon) and his famous Fifth, which is best known for its distinctive four-note opening, often called “fate knocking at the door.” Additional selections from his piano and violin concertos, overtures and other symphonies create a picture of this musical genius.

DEBUSSY / RAVEL Danse
JANÁČEK Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen
ORFF Carmina Burana

Debussy’s Danse is a whirling tarantella influenced by the composer’s travels to Italy. Leoš Janáček’s suite from his opera The Cunning Little Vixen is a work of light-hearted spirit full of lively folk tunes. Then, with a stage spilling over with more than 250 musicians, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana explodes with its entrancing rhythms and stirring poetry. Don’t miss this modern-day Canterbury Tales as it brings to life the primitive tales of love, lust, the pleasures of drinking and heightened moods provoked by springtime.

+ Post-concert Chats with the guest conductor begin shortly after the concert and are free to all ticket holders.

PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 1, “Classical”
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 2
SCHUBERT Symphony No. 4, “Tragic”

Hailed by The Philadelphia Inquirer as being “in a league with any of the great Beethoven pianists of our time,” Simone Dinnerstein will captivate you with her brilliance in Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto. Enjoy contrasts of mood and style with Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony and Schubert’s Fourth Symphony. The Prokofiev is full of youthful energy, mischief and humor, while the Schubert, subtitled “Tragic,” is a mature statement by the then-19-year-old composer that revels in its own contrasts between dark and light.

* Classical conversations with guest conductors begin one hour before the concert and are free to all ticket holders.
