Deubner Brett Deubner
Viola

New Jersey Symphony Orchestra musician BRETT DEUBNER is one of this generation’s most accomplished violists. An experienced soloist, chamber music collaborator and educator, he has inspired worldwide critical acclaim for his powerful intensity and sumptuous tone.

His solo appearances include praiseworthy performances with the Grammy Award-winning NJSO; wrote The Star-Ledger, “Deubner played ... with dynamic virtuosity hitting the center of every note no matter how many there were.” He has performed to acclaim with the Knoxville Symphony, Filharmonic del Quito, New Symphony of Sofia, National Chamber Orchestra of Ukraine and National Symphony of Ecuador.

Other concerto engagements include appearances with the North Shore Philharmonic, String Orchestra of the Rockies, Falmouth Chamber Players, Camerata del Loja, New Sussex Symphony Orchestra and Desert, Central Jersey and Southern Maine Symphonies. Upcoming concerto appearances take Deubner to the Penninsula Symphony in California, Winchester Orchestra in Virginia, Missoula Symphony Orchestra, Adelphi Chamber Orchestra in New Jersey and Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado Méridain in Venezuela.

A prolific recording artist, Deubner recorded the two concertos of Frank Lewin for Albany Records, the concerto of Andrew Rudin for Centaur Records and will be releasing the viola concerto of American composer Trent Johnson. “I simply cannot imagine the piece with any solo instrument other than Mr. Deubner’s,” The Princeton Packet wrote of the Lewin recording. He has also recorded three acclaimed solo CDs for the Eroica Classical label and has released numerous chamber music recordings. Upcoming projects include a recording featuring rarely heard works of Soviet-era composers and a three-CD project of the music of Frank Levy for Naxos.

Deubner’s commitment to championing the works of living composers is evidenced by the more than 27 concerti and dozens of solo viola works, sonatas and chamber works written for him by such legendary composers as Lalo Schifrin and Samuel Adler. During the 2009–10 season, Deubner premiered four concertos that were written for him. Last season, he gave the premiere of Roger Stubblefield’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra; this season he gives the world premieres of concertos written by American composers Amanda Harberg, Charles Nichols, Houston Dunleavy and Gregg Wramage.

An active chamber musician, Deubner has appeared at the Caramoor, Bargemusic, Heidelberg, Norfolk, Kent-Blossom, Sitka, Cape May, East Coast Carolina, Bravo, Juneau Jazz & Classics and Windham Festivals, as well as the West Branch International Music Festival & Academy. He has collaborated with leading artists including pianists Joseph Kalichstein, Robert Koenig, Beth Levin, Anton Nell and Marcantonio Barone; violinists Tim Fain, Odin Rathnam, Lars Bjornkjaer, Paul Rosenthal, Zvi Zeitlin and Nina Beilina and cellists Sara Sant’ Ambrogio, Wendy Warner and Jeffrey Solow; as well as the Colorado, Tokyo and Vermeer quartets and Claremont Trio.

Deubner is the Artistic Director of “Music and More,” an exciting concert series serving the New York City metropolitan area. In demand for master classes and chamber music coaching, Deubner also serves on the faculty of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia.
