MUSICIAN INSIGHT
Roberto Sierra, Composer
| |
Musician Insight Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra was in attendance at this weekend’s NJSO performances, when the Orchestra gave his Sinfonía No. 4 its East Coast premiere. He spoke with Concert Coda about the NJSO performances:
Concert Coda: What is it like to attend premieres of your own work?
Roberto Sierra: It’s terrifying! There’s always this apprehension—it’s like seeing your child on stage, and you really want it to succeed. But then you calm down and realize that it’s awesome. Writing music is always hard labor and a challenge, and with this symphony, I’ve been very pleased with the results. It’s very special to me.
The NJSO is a tremendous orchestra, and it’s been so gratifying to hear the musicians really “get it” with my symphony—it’s been wonderful.
