PAUL HARRIS, Principal Bassist of the NJSO, has been an Orchestra member since 1979. He has played and toured internationally with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, and has recorded for Paramount and Universal Pictures. He has performed chamber works with such notables as Erick Friedman, Arnold Steinhardt and Sidney Harth, and with Music from Marlboro. As a soloist, Harris has performed with the NJSO, Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra, and the Stamford Chamber Orchestra. An enthusiastic teacher, he is Professor at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
His major studies were with David Perlman, former Principal Bassist at the Cleveland Orchestra, with significant influences from Lynn Harrell and members of the Guarneri Quartet. Paul Harris attended the Cleveland Institute of Music from which he was the first recipient of its Alumni Achievement Award for professional excellence. His hobbies include studies in philosophy and metaphysics, vigorous physical exercise, and all the old opera videos he can find. |
