CONDUCTORS

Gemma New

Recently appointed Assistant Conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Gemma New is gaining positive attention for her dedication to orchestras and passion for music. New makes several guest-conducting debuts this year, including concerts with the Macon Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Symphonique de Trois-Rivières in Canada. She is initiator and conductor of the Baltimore-based LUNAR Ensemble—a group of talented singers and instrumentalists who perform a variety of new and established chamber works.

Born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, New worked with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Southern Opera Company, NZSO National Youth Orchestra and Christchurch Youth Orchestra before moving to the United States in August 2009. Recent highlights have included conducting the BBC Scottish Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in conducting master classes, and the Macon Symphony Orchestra, Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra and BE Orchestra in concert. Committed to new music, New enjoys promoting composers’ works through conducting recordings and premiere performances.

A recent Master’s graduate of the Peabody Conservatory, New studied with Gustav Meier, Marin Alsop and Markand Thakar. During this time, she served as cover conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and assistant conductor for Peabody Opera Theatre and Peabody Concert Orchestra. New has received numerous awards, including a Dame Malvina Major Foundation Excellence in Arts Performance Award, NZ Federation of Graduate Women Scholarship, AMP New Zealand Scholarship, NZ Vice-Chancellors Committee scholarship and Adastra Foundation Award.
