ADVERTISING & PROMOTIONS SPECIALIST

Reports to: Director of Marketing & External Affairs

SUMMARY

The Advertising & Promotions Specialist develops and implements advertising and promotional campaigns to support single ticket sales and subscription sales for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. This position develops and maintains relationships with media regarding advertising and sponsorships, creates promotional opportunities and oversees programs for college students and young professionals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate and implement advertising (print, radio, TV, internet, outdoor, transit and grass roots) campaigns and schedules to support the NJSO’s single ticket and subscription sales.
  • Secure media sponsorship agreements and oversee fulfillment of those agreements. Develop and maintain relationships with media sponsors.
  • Solicit partnerships and develop concert promotions with key community partners in order to increase ticket sales. Seek opportunities to promote concerts at a grass-roots level.
  • Work with Graphic Designer to develop materials in support of marketing plans, primarily (though not limited to) the single ticket campaign. Write and prepare copy for radio and print ads, as well as some direct mail pieces and online campaigns.
  • Oversee the NJSO’s college student ticket campaign and grow attendance through this program.
  • Manage the development of the NJSO’s young professionals ticket program. Lead cross-departmental team in implementing growth strategies.
  • Maintain relationships with key community members, vendors and consultants.
  • Contribute as an active part of the marketing team, developing marketing strategies to meet institutional objectives.
  • Responsible for staying within given budget for all marketing initiatives.
  • Serve as Marketing department representative at concerts.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly departmental and team meetings.
  • Perform various administrative tasks, such as data entry, file maintenance and brochure distribution, as needed. Perform additional projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, music, communications or business, and a minimum of two years related experience or equivalent combination of education/training and experience. Experience with media planning and buying is preferred. Knowledge of classical music is a plus.

  • Prior experience with advertising and promotions.
  • Excellent copywriting/proofreading skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to negotiate with vendors and partners.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to think creatively about promotions as well as problem solving.
  • Ability to interact positively with others in a team-oriented environment.  
  • Excellent organizational skills.

SUCCESS FACTORS

Knowledge of classical music a plus. Knowledge of media planning and buying preferred. Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment where proficiency in meeting income goals is essential. A sincere desire to make classical music accessible to new and diverse audiences.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee may be required to perform the essential functions of the job during evening or weekend hours. Access to automobile preferred.

MANAGER OF EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Reports to: Director of Education & Community Engagement

SUMMARY

This position manages the education and community engagement activities of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Manages, promotes and advances the NJSO’s REACH Program through presenting programs of the highest artistic quality, educational programs for all ages, and events that benefit the overall presence of the NJSO as a community cultural ambassador.
    • Maintains and strengthens existing community partnerships and establish new opportunities
    • Administers and manages all aspect of REACH activities
    • Attends and runs meetings of the REACH Task Force, providing appropriate information to support the Task Force’s oversight of the REACH program.
    • Maintains library of chamber music, may include music editing
    • Helps development of REACH programs
    • Processes payrolls for all REACH activities
  • Manages, promotes and advances the NJSO’s Greater Newark Youth Orchestra and Greater Newark Chamber Orchestra
    • Becomes a liaison among the GNYO/GNCO conductors, coaches, students and parents
    • Works with Director of Education & Community Engagement in the selection of the artistic leadership of both groups; act as principal liaison with these positions
    • Works with coaches and conductors to facilitate seating order for the orchestras
    • Communicates with the Operations Manager for the GNYO/GNCO concert operations needs
    • Facilitates GNYO/GNCO meetings
    • Works with the Director of Education & Community Engagement to facilitate pre-concert Holiday Party
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Education & Community Engagement

WORK REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in music performance, music education, and/or music therapy
  • Minimum 2 to 5 years experience working in an arts organization or educational setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High level of organization and professionalism
  • Strong computer skills.  Thorough understanding of Microsoft Office.  Knowledge of OPAS is a plus.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends
  • Must be able to climb stairs
  • Must enjoy working with children and school teachers
  • Must have excellent negotiation skills
  • Must have valid NJ drivers license

FALL DEVELOPMENT INTERN

REPORTS TO: Manager of Development Operations

SUMMARY

The Development Department of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly motivated intern to lend support to the Development Department in all areas of development, including donor relations, fundraising, database management, and donor events. Intern will participate in preparing and maintaining the department’s donor relation and information management systems, and participate in weekly development meetings. The intern may be required to perform basic administrative tasks such as data entry using a high-end fundraising software and file management. Other duties as assigned.

FALL MARKETING INTERN

REPORTS TO: Marketing Manager

SUMMARY

The Marketing Department of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly motivated intern to lend support to the Marketing Department in the areas of Subscriptions, Single Tickets and Group Sales. Intern will participate in marketing the NJSO’s student tickets program, Class Pass, and participate in weekly marketing meetings. The intern may be required to perform basic administrative tasks such as data entry, perform basic analytical tasks and participate in grass roots marketing efforts. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Pursuing or completed a degree in Marketing, Arts Administration or an equivalent degree and/or experience.

• Strong attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

• Excellent analytical ability.

• Excellent writing and proofreading skills.

• Ability to interact positively with others in a team-oriented environment.

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
