Stephen Fang

Assistant Principal Cello

 

Currently assistant principal cellist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Stephen Fang was the cellist of the Verklärte Quartet, Grand Prize Winners at the 30th Annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition; the Svanito String Quartet, First Prize Winners at the 59th Annual Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition; and the Linden Quartet, First Prize Winners at the 56th Annual Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. As a member of these quartets, he was featured in the Fischoff Grand Prize Winner’s Tour, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage Recital Series, the Cleveland Chamber Music Society Series and the Cleveland Chamber Music Guild Series.

Fang was assistant principal of the Aspen Festival Orchestra and Akron Symphony Orchestra and principal cellist of the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra. He performed with the Iris Chamber Orchestra and Canton Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed concertos with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, and the Montclair Chamber Ensemble.

Fang has spent summers at the Aspen Music Festival, Taos School of Music, Sarasota Music Festival and the Music Academy of the West. He has also served as Richard Aaron’s teaching assistant at the Encore School for Strings. His teachers include Carter Brey, Richard Aaron, Desmond Hoebig, Stephen Geber and Eric Kim. He earned his Bachelor’s and professional studies degrees at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

When he is not playing the cello, he likes to cook, practice martial arts, hike, dabble in photography and listen to nearly every genre of music.
