Henry Kao
VIOLA
 
A member of the NJSO viola section since 1991, Henry Kao also occasionally performs with the orchestra as a violinist. He received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in violin performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Raphael Bronstein and Ariana Bronne; and a Professional Studies Certificate in viola performance from the Mannes College of Music under Sol Greitzer’s tutelage. He attended both the Manhattan School and the Mannes College as a full scholarship student. Mr. Kao was recently appointed the Music Director of the Greater Newark Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to his activities as a member of the NJSO, Mr. Kao has performed in the Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard, The Music of Andrew Lloyd Weber in Concert, and the New York City Opera’s National Company. Mr. Kao teaches privately and enjoys playing chamber music with colleagues from the NJSO. His favorite music is the music of the Classical and Romantic eras, especially Beethoven and Brahms.

Mr. Kao began violin lessons at the age of seven in his native Shanghai in the early years of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, a Columbia University-trained computer programmer, and two children. He is a skilled chef and enjoys cooking a variety of styles of food.
