Musician Insight “Playing Mahler Five was really exciting; I hadn’t played it before. I’ve played a few of his symphonies before, and this was definitely the hardest—there are a lot of notes! There was a different kind of energy for these performances, with so many musicians on stage, and such an epic nature to both of the pieces we played. The length of the Mahler is obvious, but the scope, the depth of colors and textures, the complexity of the music ... it’s amazing. And Strauss’s Four Last Songs is devastatingly beautiful; he wrote such incredible vocal music.”
