NJSO Coach-in-Residence Program in Newark

Through the NJSO Coach-in-Residence Program in Newark, the Orchestra offers customized, multi-week small-group coaching, and served in the 2015–16 season nearly 300 instrumental music students in grades 2–12. Building on the best practices and 14-year foundation of its flagship NJSO Early Strings Program, the Orchestra fosters unique partnerships to provide regular coaching sessions by NJSO musicians in residence, supplementing  in-school instruction. Read what Columbia University researchers said about the impact of this program model on students’ academic achievement, confidence and leadership!

“What I remember most about my experience in the [NJSO] program is the focus on technique. I don’t know if I would have been accepted into Arts High if it hadn’t been for [this] program.”
Junior, Arts High School, NJSO Early Strings Program Alumnus

“The strings students [became] the students that tend to excel in all areas. The advantage to string instruments is there is an incredible amount of patience that a child needs to develop. This absolutely helps them with discipline and learning.”
Vice Principal, Franklin Elementary School, Newark
