GREATER NEWARK YOUTH ORCHESTRAS

Established in 1990, the NJSO's Greater Newark Youth Orchestras give all qualified
middle- and high-school students—especially minority youth—the opportunity to study for as many as 21 weeks with NJSO musicians and gain performance experience in an encouraging and motivating environment. The program is comprised of three separate ensembles: Greater Newark Youth Orchestra—an advanced full symphonic orchestra; Greater Newark Chamber Orchestra—an intermediate string orchestra; and Greater Newark Violin Ensemble—a preparatory violin ensemble for beginners. All groups perform a minimum of two concerts each year. Additionally, the Youth Orchestra performs a side-by-side concert with the NJSO.

Program Features

Auditions for the Greater Newark Youth Orchestras take place in Bradley Hall of Rutgers University Newark campus and are judged by a panel of NJSO musicians, who coach in the GNYO program. Acceptance is based on demonstrated ability, as well as the ensembles' needs.

“[My daughter] definitely practices a lot more and a lot better. I can hear how much she’s grown musically as a result. She’s also developing stronger ensemble skills. She feels a real responsibility to the group to do her best.”
Marlene, Greater Newark Violin Ensemble parent

"Being in this program helps young kids do things that they didn’t know they could do. The best is that it’s helped build my confidence. I learn a lot, but I have a lot of fun at the same time.”
Antonio, Greater Newark Chamber Orchestra bassist
