Art Director

Status: Full–Time Exempt
Reports to: Vice President of Marketing & External Affairs

Core responsibility: to develop and steward the NJSO’s visual identity across the entire organization, concept and create print and online materials and manage relationships with printing vendors, all in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities. 

ART DIRECTION (45%)

  • Create, develop and manage the visual identity for all units of the NJSO, including the NJSO itself, NJSO Youth Orchestras and other Education & Community Engagement activities, Symphony Friends, Amadeus Circle and annual fundraising events, among others. 
  • Evaluate long- and short-term design opportunities and needs. Collaborate with team members to address design needs. 
  • Maintain brand standards and guide staff on correct use of assets.
  • Develop digital creative for use in various web and social media campaigns.
  • Develop annual subscription brochure identity and theme, and translate design concepts throughout all other season-specific marketing materials.  
  • Direct photo shoots and select photography.
  • Actively collaborate with members of the marketing team in the production of informational and promotional videos.


PRODUCTION (45%)

  • Design and execute all printed materials (including, but not limited to, concert program books, print advertising, brochures, flyers and postcards) and electronic assets (including items such as digital advertising, website graphics and email banners). 
  • Ensure all production and delivery deadlines are met. 
  • Maintain digital archives of projects. Manage extensive asset library of photos and logos. 
  • Execute routine backups of system to protect project and asset files. 
  • Attend press runs as needed.


ADDITIONAL CORE FUNCTIONS (10%)

  • Cultivate and develop relationships with outside vendors such as printers, web designers, graphic designers and photographers while securing aggressive bids and cost-effective solutions for the Orchestra.  
  • Serve as primary liaison for freelance designers working on print design or digital design projects, when applicable.
  • With marketing team, brainstorm ideas for strategic advertising initiatives in print, promotional, digital, social media, video and interactive.


OTHER

  • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituents, including concertgoers, staff members and vendors.
  • Attend concerts and represent the NJSO to concertgoers throughout the state.
  • Participate in additional projects to fulfill the needs of the department and the organization.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (marketing, graphic/digital design, arts administration).
  • Five years of strong digital marketing and graphic design experience, preferably in an organization that presents events. 
  • Strong proficiency in the latest Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design) as well as ability with PowerPoint.
  • Portfolio showing strong skills in both design and conceptual thinking in various media including print and digital.
  • Assist NJSO departments in extending campaigns across various media and resizing ads into different formats.
  • Broad understanding of basic marketing principles.

Appreciation for the classical music and/or the arts is preferred, but not required.

OTHER INFO

  • Only applicants with the correct background will be contacted.
  • Must be able to physically work in our Newark, NJ, office.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and some holidays; and provide own transportation to multiple NJSO performance venues.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.

Salary and Benefits: The NJSO offers a competitive salary and benefits package but does not offer re-location expenses.

Hours: Full time. Expectation is to work business hours, between 8 am and 6 pm. Additional evenings and weekends are required, specifically for working concerts in multiple locations throughout northern New Jersey and promotional on sales.
