2021 Winter Festival

George Gershwin & the Sounds of America

George Gershwin is, in many ways, the quintessential American composer.

In our 2021 Winter Festival, Xian Zhang highlights iconic works—such as An American in Paris and the Piano Concerto in F—that seamlessly blend the styles of classical, jazz and popular music.

We’ll feature Gershwin’s music alongside his influences (Weill) and those he influenced (Bernstein and Ellington), and for the festival finale, hear the world premiere of a new jazz French horn concerto for NJSO all-star Principal Horn Chis Komer alongside Gershwin’s magnum opus, the iconic opera Porgy and Bess.
