NJSO Preschool Program in Newark

Through the NJSO Preschool Program, the Orchestra provides 3- to 5-year-old preschoolers across the Newark’s network of preschool providers with a comprehensive, age-appropriate introduction to the magic of orchestral music.

Through the NJSO Preschool Program in Newark, our tiniest patrons begin their lifelong love of live music with an interactive introduction to the magic of the orchestra. Early-childhood specialists and music educators from Touch the Music, an NJSO partner organization, visit preschool classrooms and provide students with a hands-on introduction to orchestral instruments and age-appropriate repertoire. Claudia Baumgaertner Lemmerz from Touch the Music says: “Students are engaged and excited, while teachers and directors are often awed by the responses we get from the children. Preschoolers are like sponges, soaking up any new experience with curiosity and enthusiasm.”

Students also enjoy a private performance by NJSO musicians—right on the colored rugs of their classrooms—and attend a specially designed NJSO concert at NJPAC that features visual, auditory and participatory elements.

This program annually serves as many as 1,500 preschoolers and their educators across the city’s network of preschool providers.

The program is free for Newark preschool providers thanks to the generosity of NJSO donors. Preschool providers outside of Newark can also participate on a fee-for-service basis. For questions and reservations, please contact [email protected] or 973.735.1733.
