This evening’s performance explores the evolving sound of American music, bringing together voices from past and present. The program features both New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players and Montclair resident and New Jersey Symphony Resident Artistic Partner Allison Loggins-Hull, an African American composer known for her genre-defying work as a flutist, composer, and producer, alongside pioneering African American composer Florence Price. Price’s String Quartet in G Major (1929) reflects a rich blend of classical tradition and African American musical idioms, helping to shape a distinctly American voice in classical music.
The program concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12, “American”, written during his time in the United States and inspired by his belief that American music should draw from African American spirituals and Indigenous traditions.

This concert is held in collaboration with the Van Vleck House & Gardens and The Montclair Foundation.
