Bach: Chaconne for Solo Violin

 

NJSO violinist Maya Shiraishi writes: "Bach found out the death of his wife in the same year that he wrote this Chaconne. To me, playing Chaconne is about life specially during this dark time, and I can feel the pain that Bach had. I lost my father, who was a big fan of me, in August, and I would like to dedicate this video to him."

“O Gato e o Canário” by Pixinguinha

 

Brazilian composer Pixinguinha (Alfredo da Rocha Viana Jr.) fused the choro music of his homeland with African rhythms and 20th-century European harmonies. Hear his “O Gato e o Canário” (“The Cat and the Canary”), arranged for double bass, xylophone and marimba by NJSO Principal Timpani Gregory LaRosa.

NJSO violinist Wendy Chen performs Chopin’s Nocturne in C-Sharp Minor for violin and piano with her longtime friend Weicong Zhang, a piano professor in Shanghai Conservatory.

Wendy writes: “When everything else fails to quiet my mind I usually turn to practice. So when my mind was drowning in news, debates, conflicts and fear a couple weeks ago, I decided to use the chance to record a short piece for [the NJSO]. I chose this particular Chopin Nocturne because I find it speaks to my sorrow, frustration, as well as admiration, gratitude, love and hope during this time ... So this is to all of you sincerely from my heart. ❤️ Special thanks to my dear friend Weicong Zhang for this cross-country collaboration.”
