Francesca Dego stuns the audience in her New Jersey Symphony debut

Apr 13, 2026

Violinist Francesca Dego reunited with Music Director Xian Zhang to deliver three stunning performances of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with the New Jersey Symphony in a program that also featured two works not regularly performed by orchestras: Webern’s Im Sommerwind and Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben. James C. Taylor of NJ Advance Media was at NJPAC to review the performance.

The New Jersey Symphony proved, once again this past weekend, that the centuries-old, often creaky world of classical music is capable of re-invention. The main example of this was the NJS debut of Francesca Dego. ... Dego and the orchestra played together fluidly and in-synch during the clockwork-like opening passages. Then they developed a strong, rhythmic build during the movement’s later measures, before shifting to the plucky finale, complete with castanets.
