Listen: Xian Zhang’s debut as BBC NOW Principal Guest Conductor

NJSO Music Director Xian Zhang made her debut as BBC National Orchestra of Wales Principal Guest Conductor yesterday. A full BBC Radio 3 audio broadcast of the concert—plus an interview with Zhang—is available online through October 26.

The BBC NOW concert opened with Tchaikovsky’s Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, the first work Zhang will conduct in her debut as NJSO Music Director, October 27–30. Yesterday’s program also included Barber’s Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.

The broadcast also features a performance of Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, which Zhang will perform in New Jersey on a March program that also includes Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto.

Zhang debuts as NJSO Music Director across two weekends, with an all-Tchaikovsky program October 27–30 and works by Beethoven, Haydn and Strauss November 3–6. The NJSO welcomes her with a Gala Celebration on Saturday, November 5, at NJPAC in Newark.
