Music Director Xian Zhang has a triumphant return with the New York Philharmonic
New Jersey Symphony Music Director Xian Zhang made her return to New York City to conduct the New York Philharmonic, an organization where she was once the Associate Conductor for and has not conducted since 2009, in an early January performance that featured Yefim Bronfman performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto, along with Chen Yi’s Landscape Impression and Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, which she had conducted with the New Jersey Symphony one weekend prior. James C. Taylor of NJ Advance Media made the trek across the Hudson River to review the performance at the David Geffen Hall.
Zhang’s ability to collaborate and create contrasting — but still captivating — sounds with different collaborators is why she’s made the New Jersey Symphony so exciting. And also, why she’s in such demand on major podiums today.
