Press Reviews and Features

“On Friday evening at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center here, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra kicked off its 91st season with a gala program that aimed higher, showing that it’s possible to impart a meaningful artistic experience without spoiling anyone’s fun.”

“Lacombe and the NJSO delivered an appealingly conceived program and a sure-footed performance. Also marking the change of season, James Roe, who acted as principal oboist last season, appeared this time as the orchestra’s president and CEO.”

FROM THE STAGE

Ann-Kossakowski-spot.jpg“Pairing Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony with spirituals was a terrific idea. The choir, Afro Blue, was awesome, and the effect of the spirituals was powerful. I really liked Geri Allen’s piece as well. It was great to have a gospel presence in this program—I love gospel music, and it reminded me of gospel Christmas programs the NJSO has performed in the past.

“I also loved the jewel tones the orchestra women wore for Opening Night; it was a fun visual for the start of the season. Opening weekend is always special—it’s great to be back and playing together again.”
