Star-Ledger praises NJSO's new Verdi recording

Dec 22, 2014

The Star-Ledger praises the NJSO's new recording of Verdi's Requiem, writing:

This November, the NJSO released a live recording of Verdi’s Requiem led by music director Jacques Lacombe.

It’s a compelling take on the work, from the solemn tone and the velvety strings of the first phrases leading into a delicate, reverent Kyrie. The slashing power, impressively clean strings and powerful, controlled brass in the Dies Irae build to as a fearsome Liber Scriptus and dramatic conclusion ...

Choosing this monumental piece also lays out the case that while the NJSO may not have the same historical place as the nearby New York Philharmonic or Philadelphia Orchestra, it is an ambitious ensemble worthy of attention.
