Feb 9, 2026

The New Jersey Symphony celebrated the Year of the Horse with the annual Lunar New Year Celebration concert on Saturday, February 7 at NJPAC in Newark, with Seattle Symphony Associate Conductor Sunny Xia leading the way in a program that featured guest pianist Haochen Zhang, the Peking University Alumni and Starry Arts Children’s Choruses and the Edison Chinese School Lion Dance Team. James C. Taylor of NJ Advance Media was there to review the performance.

Chinese Lunar New Year concerts have become popular in the last decade here in the United States. The New Jersey Symphony is at the forefront of this new tradition, in which an orchestra plays a mix of classical chestnuts alongside Chinese folk music or recent Asian-themed compositions.
