The Tangos of Piazzolla
Astor Piazzolla was Argentinian composer known for his beautiful tangos. His instrument of choice was a bandoneón. Similar to an accordion, it is the most important instrument in a traditional tango. With Mambo Kings set to join the NJSO next weekend, here are a few samples of this 20th-century dance-band style.
“Triunfal”
When Piazzolla went to study with the famous music composition teacher Nadia Boulanger, he intended on showing her only his strictly classical works. However, it was only when Piazzolla finally pulled out a tango that she was truly impressed. She encouraged him to always compose tangos, as that was clearly his spirit song. The rest was history.
This is that very first tango that Piazzolla presented to Boulanger.
“Libertango”
One of the faster tangos, it is a challenge for dancers and instrumentalists alike.
“Escualo”
A more fiery tango.
“Zita”
A classic example of a romantic tango. It emphasizes the lovers’ duet.
“Jeanne y Paul”
Another romantic tango, named for its dancers.
“Oblivion”
Composed by Piazzolla in 1982, this slow tango is guaranteed to melt your heart. It has been arranged many times because of its popularity and romantic beauty.
Don’t miss Mambo Kings and the NJSO bring their own Latin jazz twist to the tango and more February 16–18 at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJPAC in Newark and State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick.
