NJSO Music Education Night introduces #OrchestraYou
ATTENDEES CAN PLAY ALONGSIDE NJSO MUSICIANS IN POST-CONCERT SESSION
HILARY HAHN PLAYS BRAHMS’ VIOLIN CONCERTO ON PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES STRAVINSKY’S THE FIREBIRD SUITE (1945) AND SALONEN’S GIRO
NEWARK, NJ (February 14, 2014)—The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra celebrates music educators, music students and their families with Music Education Night at the Orchestra’s March 15 performance, which features Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn performing Brahms’ Violin Concerto, at 8 pm at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The evening’s finale is the first ever #OrchestraYou—a special post-concert session in which audience members can perform their own orchestral instruments alongside NJSO musicians.
#OrchestraYou will unite students, music teachers and administrators, parents, subscribers, music lovers and NJSO musicians. Audience members can bring their own orchestral instruments and perform alongside NJSO musicians in a special post-concert session led by NJSO Education & Community Engagement Conductor Jeffrey Grogan in the Prudential Hall lobby. Grogan will lead #OrchestraYou in “Les Toreadors” from Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1. Concert attendees can watch the session unfold from rehearsal to performance and can share their photos and comments on social media using the #OrchestraYou hashtag.
All #OrchestraYou participants must register in advance by phone at 1.800.ALLEGRO (255.3476). Performers must hold or purchase a ticket to the March 15 concert; there is no additional charge to participate, and there are no auditions. Opening the evening, a concert prelude in the lobby will feature young student performers. An “Inspiration Wall” will exhibit tales written by our NJSO musicians about music teachers who inspired them; attendees can add their own inspirational stories to add to the wall.
At 8 pm, Hahn joins guest conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier and the NJSO for Brahms’ Violin Concerto on a concert program that also features Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1945) and Salonen’s Giro. As part of a month-long food drive, the Orchestra will collect non-perishable food items at a table in the lobby to donate to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which assists more than 900,000 people in 18 counties across the state.
