NJSO PRESENTS TRIO OF UNIQUE PROGRAMS IN PRINCETON

NEWARK, NJ (May 6, 2014)—The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra expands its annual tradition of presenting summer concerts throughout New Jersey in June and July. The NJSO performs in five outdoor park settings throughout the state in June, presenting free summer programs at Pier A Park in Hoboken, Branch Brook Park in Newark and Mercer County Park in West Windsor, in addition to appearing at two outdoor festivals—at Moorland Farms in Far Hills and Giralda Farms in Madison—and presenting a free indoor concert at bergenPAC in Englewood.

New this summer, the NJSO performs a trio of unique programs at the Richardson Auditorium in Princeton in July. The Orchestra gives the world premiere of Edward T. Cone’s Symphony in a special lecture-performance as a capstone to the NJSO’s five-year New Jersey Roots Project. In a separate program, the Orchestra premieres works by the composers of the first NJSO Edward T. Cone Composition Institute, a multi-faceted program that promotes new music and emerging composers, presented in collaboration with the Princeton University Department of Music. Additionally, the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Orchestra performs at the Golandsky Institute International Piano Festival.

FREE SUMMER PARKS PROGRAMS
The NJSO’s 2014 free summer parks program honors New Jersey’s rich cultural past as part of the NJ350 celebration, honoring the Garden State’s 350th anniversary with a salute to Frank Sinatra, a medley of Jersey Boys classics and Count Basie’s “One O’Clock Jump.” In addition to its tradition of performing patriotic favorites, the NJSO looks ahead to the classical favorites of its 2014–15 season, performing selections from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” Symphony, Mozart’s Così fan tutte Overture and more.

NJSO Associate Conductor Gemma New conducts the summer parks concerts, which reflect the Orchestra’s commitment to bringing live symphonic music to communities throughout the state.

Concerts take place on the following dates:

  • Thursday, June 19, at Pier A Park in Hoboken (7:30 pm) – Free concert
  • Wednesday, June 25, at bergenPAC in Englewood (7:30 pm) – Free concert (doors will open at 6:30 for first-come, first-served seating)
  • Friday, June 27, at Essex County Branch Brook Park in Newark (7:30 pm) – Free concert with fireworks
  • Sunday, June 29, at Mercer County Park in West Windsor (7:30 pm) – Free concert with fireworks

SUMMER IN PRINCETON
On Thursday, July 17, the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Orchestra performs at the Golandsky Institute International Piano Festival at Princeton University. Mark Laycock conducts a program of four piano concertos—internationally acclaimed Russian-born pianist Ilya Itin solos in music of Mozart and Shostakovich, Bach expert Fr. Sean Duggan plays Bach’s Keyboard Concerto and young artists of the Golandsky Institute join them for a rarely heard performance of Bach’s Concerto for Four Pianos. Tickets are available at www.golandskyinstitute.org.

On Friday, July 18, the NJSO gives the world premiere of Edward T. Cone’s Symphony in a special lecture-concert celebrating the legacy of composer. Music Director Jacques Lacombe and distinguished composer Steven Mackey will explore this work of the much-revered composer-teacher, illuminating the symphony with excerpts and key listening points, as well as describing Cone’s impact on generations of composers that followed him.

This concert is the capstone of the NJSO’s New Jersey Roots Project, a five-year survey of works written by composers who lived in or were inspired by the Garden State. Tickets are available online at www.njsymphony.org or by phone at 1.800.ALLEGRO (255.3476). More information about the New Jersey Roots Project is available at www.njsymphony.org/njroots.

On Saturday, July 19, the NJSO gives the world premieres of works by the composers of the NJSO Edward T. Cone Composition Institute, a multi-faceted program that promotes new music and emerging composers, presented in collaboration with the Princeton University Department of Music and generously funded in part by the Edward T. Cone Foundation. Up to four composers will participate in five days of intense compositional evaluations and consultations July 15–19 on the Princeton University campus; the program culminates in the live concert performance led by Lacombe at the Richardson Auditorium.

At the Institute, participating composers will have their work rehearsed and performed by the NJSO and will participate in master classes with Institute Director Steven Mackey, as well as receive feedback from Lacombe and NJSO musicians. The Institute will also provide career-development opportunities with music-publishing industry leaders. More information is available at www.njsymphony.org/institute.

Named “a vital, artistically significant musical organization” by The Wall Street Journal, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships and unparalleled access to music and the Orchestra’s superb musicians.

Under the bold leadership of Music Director Jacques Lacombe, the NJSO presents classical, pops and family programs, as well as outdoor summer concerts and special events. Embracing its legacy as a statewide orchestra, the NJSO is the resident orchestra of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and regularly performs at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Richardson Auditorium in Princeton, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown and bergenPAC in Englewood. Partnerships with New Jersey arts organizations, universities and civic organizations remain a key element of the Orchestra’s statewide identity.

In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music. Programs include the three-ensemble Greater Newark Youth Orchestras, school-time Concerts for Young People performances and multiple initiatives that provide and promote in-school instrumental instruction. The NJSO’s Resources for Education and Community Harmony (REACH) chamber music program annually brings original programs—designed and performed by NJSO musicians—to a variety of settings, reaching as many as 17,000 people in nearly all of New Jersey’s 21 counties.
