CONCERT CODA

PRESS REVIEWS AND FEATURES

“Before the show began on Friday at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, a musician named a few universities with students in the audience for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s first College Night. The 150-or-so students screamed as their schools were named, and their enthusiasm was just as palpable as the concert ended with a sharp performance of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition.’”

“A ticket to the [NJSO’s March 1 concert at NJPAC]. Ten bucks. A post-concert party with live music, and busing to Newark and home again. Free. A hundred or more college students at a classical music concert? Priceless.”

MUSICIAN INSIGHT

Karl_Herman_Coda.jpgKarl Herman, Principal Clarinet

“What’s really important [about presenting an event like Friday’s College Night] is that younger people feel that their way of relating to classical music [can fit with] the regular classical concert experience. I was struck by how excited the rest of the audience was to see all the students at the concert. It was fun to give the students their own section and invite them to interact with the Orchestra through social media. Social media is such a big part of how they relate not only to each other but also to the world; so our [classical] world should be able to relate to them in same way.

“Having college students being comfortable interacting with the Orchestra is huge. I was able to perform with [NJSO clarinetist Andrew Lamy] and the William Paterson clarinet ensemble [that Lamy coaches] at the post-concert party. I was really impressed with the student performers [at the party]; they were very talented. I was able to talk with a bunch of kids about my career and instrument, as well as their plans for after college—it was a lot of fun.”
