The New Jersey Symphony and Undead Arts bring Mozart’s The Magic Flute to life in epic Jersey City collaboration
Since its formation in January 2025, Undead Arts has captivated audiences in Jersey City with a goal of keeping opera alive, and they took it up to another level as they produced their first main stage collaboration with the New Jersey Symphony, with two performances of Mozart’s timeless classic, The Magic Flute, at the Harborside Atrium in Jersey City on May 2 & 3. James C. Taylor of NJ Advance Media reviewed the first performance of the weekend.
“The Magic Flute” will turn 235 this year, and thanks to the New Jersey Symphony and Undead Arts, hearing it captivate hundreds of Garden State listeners in a corporate mall on a sunny Saturday afternoon made it clear that the opera is still very much alive.

The Symphony, which does not do opera often, has found a fun partner in Undead Arts, a Jersey City nonprofit whose mission is to make art and culture accessible to all; children 18 and younger attend all performances free of charge. Little surprise that both performances — which featured an ensemble of Symphony musicians, led by conductor Gregory D. McDaniel — were sold out.
