The versatility of Vocalise

Nov 29, 2017

Rachmaninoff truly saved the best for last. Vocalise—the last song in his collection of 14 songs, Op. 34—has won the hearts of many and rivals any tune the composer wrote. Originally written for voice and piano, this song has been transcribed for nearly every instrument imaginable. Here are six memorable versions of Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise:

1. Eight cellos

2. Electric Guitar

Rock legend Slash did a cover for electric guitar and rock band. It works really well as a rock ballad. Get your lighters ready!

3. Theremin

One of the more innovative versions with an uncommon instrument.

4. Saxophone with jazz band

This arrangement has a smooth-jazz feel.

5. Viola

Simple and classic.

6. Trumpet

This one feels like it fits in both worlds of classical and jazz.
