Tito Muñoz, Michelle Cann and the New Jersey Symphony ‘lets loose’ with an all-American performance

Nov 10, 2025

Tito Muñoz made his New Jersey Symphony conducting debut as he and guest pianist Michelle Cann joined the orchestra for four consecutive performances of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement, in a program that also included the Northeast Premiere of Carlos Simon’s Zodiac and Copland’s Suite from Billy the Kid. James C. Taylor of NJ Advance Media reviewed the Sunday afternoon performance at State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick.

The New Jersey Symphony can multitask. They play many different styles at many different venues. One constant for the past 100 years for the group has been is playing — and premiering — American music. This weekend’s concert series was a good reminder of just how well they do this.

Ralph Malachowski of PhillyGayCalendar reviewed the Friday evening performance in Princeton, commenting on Cann’s performance.

Her playing was incredible. Naturally, the audience was galvanized into their seats, until the conclusion,  whereupon the house popped up and went wild with acclaim for her and the brilliant orchestra.
