MUSICIAN INSIGHT

“[The Rococo Variations are] Tchaikovsky [going] through a real kaleidoscope of emotional worlds. The slow movements are both sublime—it’s Tchaikovsky at his melodic best. And on the other hand, the work is a real display piece; the variations are designed to show what the cello can do as a virtuoso instrument.

“As a musician in the Orchestra, I love when our own musicians are soloists. We really try to give a ‘gold carpet’ kind of accompaniment. [It’s special] to get that kind of care [and support] from my colleagues. These are my friends, my musical family … It’s an honor, and a wonderful thing to get to do.”
