Students perform in Unity Youth Symphony in NYC Sep 12

Sep 12, 2016

Members of the NJSO Academy Orchestra join the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura—featured on “60 Minutes” and in the documentary Landfill Harmonic for playing instruments made of recycled garbage in Paraguay—along with members of the InterSchool Orchestras of New York and New Jersey Youth Symphony for a special concert at Trinity Church in New York tonight, September 12, at 6 pm.

A live steam of the concert will be available on the Trinity Church website. The special program features selections both classical and contemporary sounds of hope from around the world.

The Academy Orchestra is the top ensemble of the NJSO Youth Orchestras. Artistic Director Jeffrey Grogan, who also directs the InterSchool Orchestras of New York and New Jersey Youth Symphony, assembled 25 students from the three ensembles to join the members of the Paraguayan orchestra to create the Unity Youth Symphony that performs this concert.

Grogan says: “The chance for these students to come together, share and talk about their cultures, coupled with the musical exchange that will happen, is very powerful. For our musicians to experience these students from Paraguay, especially given the conditions in which they live, how they worked so hard to put together these instruments and the passion they have, will be incredible. It makes you so appreciative of what you have and how available music is. For [the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura] kids and teachers to make these instruments and this orchestra when they didn’t have resources is amazing.”

The concert falls at the start of National Arts Education Week.
