The Symphony’s 2024 Lunar New Year Celebration continues our tradition, first developed by Music Director Xian Zhang, of blending music from East and West in a celebration of cultural collaboration. This year, under the baton of conductor Yue Bao, the Symphony will perform selections from Huang Ruo’s Folk Songs for Orchestra and Zhou Tian’s Gift plus tried-and-true favorites like Spring Festival Overture. Rising star Tony Siqi Yun joins at the piano to perform selections from the Yellow River Concerto and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. You won’t want to miss this celebration to ring in the Year of the Dragon!

The musical that gave the world “New York, New York,” On the Town was a hit from its wartime premiere. The story of three sailors on leave in Manhattan is filled with Bernstein’s signature restless energy, and made huge waves of its own in the 1940s with a racially diverse cast.

Dancers from Nimbus Dance add dynamic original choreography to our Newark and Morristown performances.

New Jersey Symphony Resident Artistic Catalyst Daniel Bernard Roumain returns to The Newark Museum of Art with the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players for a program that presents music through the lens of an emotional arc that meets the moment. The concert will also feature the Anne Lieberson Ensemble, a string quartet of principal players from the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra.
DBR has curated works from amazing composers like Florence Price, Mozart and Farrenc and presents his own powerful works such as Hip-Hop Study & Etude in F Major and E-flat Major and his arrangement of Lift Every Voice and Sing. The Chamber Players perform the Ukrainian national anthem in solidarity with the people of Ukraine during the unjust war that continues.

Born in Hampton, Virginia, living the life of a slave and functioning as a preacher on the plantation, Nat Turner believed himself to be a prophet. He felt he received a sign from God that it was time to do something about slavery and the abuse that his people, Black people, were receiving in the South. As a result, he organized the revolt and killed all those he felt were responsible for the cruelty, for years, exercised upon the ones he loved. He received a sign from God and acted upon it. This is what he firmly believed.

The NJSO joins forces with Newark-based opera company Trilogy for a special video presentation of selections from Michael Raphael’s Emmett Till oratorio. Join community leaders and Trilogy Artistic Director Kevin Maynor for an evening of conversation about the impact of Till’s murder and the way that art and music help tell important stories, followed by an exclusive premiere of the project.
After Emmett Till was murdered, his mother, Mamie Till, insisted on an open-casket funeral because she “wanted the world to see what they did to my baby.” This program uses historical images that are graphic in nature and may be upsetting to some audiences. Viewer discretion advised.

Pioneering Latin American composers produced a rich legacy of music in the 19th and early 20th centuries that combined western classical traditions with indigenous folk songs and rhythms, creating distinct national styles in countries such as Argentina, Cuba and Mexico and inspiring future generations of musicians.

Attention piano lovers! The Golandsky Institute International Piano Festival at Princeton University presents four piano concertos in one evening, with the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mark Laycock. Internationally acclaimed Russian-born master Ilya Itin solos in music of Mozart and Shostakovich, Bach expert Fr. Sean Duggan plays Bach's Keyboard Concerto in E Major and young artists of the Golandsky Institute join them for a rarely heard performance of Bach’s Concerto for Four Pianos.

From beloved favorites including Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 6 to the bursting energy of Leonard Bernstein’s Fancy Free and the danceable melodies of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, this program brings the excitement and beauty of ballet music into the concert hall. Greater Newark Youth Orchestras' Annual Spring Concert
Experience the artistry of the NJSO’s youth ensembles! Program includes Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, Grieg’s Holberg Suite and Kristin Hauge’s “Rondo,” a new composition written for the Greater Newark Violin Ensemble. The concert will also showcase the 2014 Concerto Competition winner, violinist Rachel Seo, performing the first movement of Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole.
